Cognitive assessments can be utilised to explore an individuals pattern of strengths and vulnerabilities as they relate to general thinking and reasoning abilities. This can assist with the development of personalised interventions in the family home and at school and with the implementation of individualised learning plans. Cognitive assessments can contribute to the examination of intellectual giftedness, learning differences, and intellectual differences.

An educational assessment can help discover an individuals learning potential, identify specific learning challenges, and help individuals to gain insight into their learning ability. Common areas of learning difficulties are reading, spelling, and writing, and mathematics (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia). As with a cognitive assessment, this assessment will contribute to the examination of learning differences and implementation of individualised intervention and accommodations.
